Softlayer bandwidth between datacenters is NOT charged to your bandwidth limits. They (Softlayer) provide you with a completely independent gigabit network (usually serviced by Cogent). They also provide you with a PPTP or IPSEC (PPTP is free, IPSEC is $$), VPN tunnel that connects over the private network, allowing you to completely block off all administration traffic from your front end network, closing many common security holes.
